Self-Evident Miracles of the Holy Qur'an (2)

"We shall show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth" (Qur'an 41:53)".

 

Numerous books and articles have been written discussing the numerical aspect of various words that appear in the Qur'an. No conclusive inference has been drawn from these studies, but it is so unique that it adds a new dimension to the miraculous nature of the Qur'an. The following are a few examples of this phenomenon.

 

1. The Qur'an states that there are seven heavens. This description appears in only seven surahs (chapters) of the Qur'an.

 

2. The Qur'an states that the number of months as decreed by Allah is twelve. The Arabic word for month is 'shahr' and the word 'shahr' appears in the Qur'an only twelve times.

 

3. The Arabic word 'iman' means 'faith'. The opposite of this word is 'kufr', which means 'denial'. The word 'iman' appears in the Qur'an a total of seventeen times. Surprisingly, the word 'kufr' also appears in the Qur'an seventeen times. Moreover, the indefinite form, 'imanun'  appears eight times, and its counterpart, 'kufrun' also appears eight times.

 

4. The Arabic word 'mala'ikah' means 'angels' and the word 'shaitan' refers to the devil himself. The two words are opposite to each other in their attributes and roles. The Qur'an has used both of these words 68 times each.

 

5. The Arabic word 'dunya' means the 'world' and the word 'akhirah' means the 'hereafter'. Both of these words have appeared in the Qur'an 115 times each.

 

6. The Arabic word "fa'l" means 'action' and the word 'ajr' means 'reward'. The word fa'l appears in the Qur'an a total of 108 times. The same is true of the word 'ajr'.

 

7. The Arabic word 'nutfah' means 'sperm-drop', and the word 'teen' means clay. The Qur'an states that man is created from 'teen' and a 'nutfah'. The word 'nutfah' appears in the Qur'an a total of twelve times, as does the word 'teen'.

 

8. 'Ar-Rahman' and 'Ar-Raheem' are two names of Allah derived from the word 'rahmah' which means 'mercy'. 'Rahman' refers to mercy associated with justice, whereas 'Raheem' refers to mercy associated with forgiveness. The word 'Rahman' appears in the Qur'an a total of 57 times, but the word 'Raheem' appears a total of 114 times, which is double of 57. This ratio corresponds with various sayings of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stating that the mercy of Allah overcomes His wrath.

 

9. The Arabic word 'jaza' means payment or compensation. The word 'mughfirah' means forgiveness. The word 'jaza' appears in the Qur'an 117 times, while the word 'mughfirah' appears 234 times, a number double 117. This again supports the concept that Allah's forgiveness is dominant.

 

Many such numerical symmetries have been pointed out by various people. Each of the symmetries has a specific relationship to the topic under discussion. Needless to say, Prophet Muhammed (peace and blessings be upon him) did not have a computer to count all the words in the Qur'an or to calculate for use of a certain word in a specific numerical relationship to corresponding words or subjects in the Qur'an.        

 

"Neither did you (O Muhammed) read any book before it (this Qur'an), nor did you write any book (whatsoever) with your right hand. In that case, indeed, the followers of falsehood might have doubted". (Qur'an 29:48)
