Ismailis, also known as Aga Khanis, are supposed to be an off-shoot of Shiaism. The reason I say supposed to be is because their religous practices are concocted and strange.
They follow the Aga Khan, who is considered their Imam. They 'pray' five prayers (but at three times of the day - 6am, midday and evening, at fixed times). They 'pray' in a completely different manner. Their place of worship is called 'Jamaat Khana' not as Masjid. Their salah is different to what has been taught to us by the Prophet pbuh. They do not face the Qa'aba when praying but instead all sit around in a circle - apparently with a picture of the Aga Khan in the middle (this needs verification please). Their prayer consists mainly of recitals and supplications all performed while sitting down and in way resembles the normal salah. They do not need to perform Haj and have quite a few rulings on different aspects of the religion. The Aga Khan gives out rulings on issues they face. These rulings are called 'Farman'.
The Aga Khan owns some of the finest breed of racing horses and is well known the world over for this. The Ismailis are a small community, and hence are very organized and methodical in what they do. The Aga Khan Foundation has done a number of social welfare projects all over the world in an effort to proselytise Muslims (and others) to their line of thinking. I knew an Ismaili and it was from him that I learnt most of their basic beliefs - through mutual dialogue. He himself is part
If you read up their history, you will find that most of the modern day Ismailis are descendants of Hindus from the Sindh region who converted to Islam and then drifted away to Ismaili beliefs owing to a number of factors. However, the history from Ismaili sources is quite different, and their claim is that it originated a few decades after the death of the Prophet pbuh.
If you have access to the internet, please take a look at the following sites for more information about Ismailis. If you do not have access, please let me know through the forum and I will download this material and have it emailed to you:
You should also see the following website, maintained by the Ismailis themselves, since no scholarly attempt is complete unless you also read about the 'other' side of the subject:
Be aware brother, there are so many different groups and sects out their. Hold fast to the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet pbuh, since this is the only way to be saved.
With salaams
